The Federation of Energy Trade Unions is organising a protest on Wednesday, November 20, at 11:00 AM in front of the Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity, regarding the new Pension Law that came into effect on September 1, 2024.
The unions argue that the law jeopardizes workers in the nuclear sector, specifically those at Feldioara (dealing with uranium dioxide powder) and Mioveni (nuclear fuel production). The law increases the required contribution period and sets a minimum retirement age of 45 for these workers.
Unions are calling for the retention of the previous pension conditions and contribution periods for workers in radiation-exposed areas (Zone I and II), as regulated since 1990. They highlight that the new law increases the required contribution years for workers in these areas by seven to ten years and introduces a minimum age for retirement, regardless of how long they’ve worked in hazardous conditions.
Additionally, unions seek the recognition of prior pension contribution periods under the old law, which the new law no longer acknowledges, leading to perceived unfair treatment and pension disparities. The Federation urges all dissatisfied individuals to join the protest for change.
